Jolina opts for a different Destiny

Labels: ,

Singing straight from the heart is what Jolina Magdangal does in her latest album, Jolina Destiny. After all she has gone through, expect a mature Jolina giving every word of the songs the right emotion as she bids adieu to her teeny-bopper image in Paper Roses.Destiny is Jolina's character in GMA Films' I.T.A.L.Y (I Trust And Love You) which will open in theaters on Sept. 17. The movie also stars Dennis Trillo, Rufa Mae Quinto and Eugene Domingo.

"If you notice, I have rock and glamour shots in the album," says Jolina of what one will expect from her in the latest GMA Records musical outing.

"That's because I have two tracks (Umibig Ka and Isang Taon written by Mark Tupas of Shamrock) that are rock (but not yet the Bring Me To Life type). It is a sort of introduction I like to do rock in the future."

Asked why she tries to go beyond her comfort zone, Jolina replies. "I just want to make others feel that I can do this kind of music and not to be typecast in a certain genre. I do this because I want to."

Listeners can feel this change of musical direction in Jolina Destiny. However, for the meantime, they have to be entertained with Jolina's soothing voice and ponder the songs' lyrics and the emotions Jolina put in every rendition.

Jolina Destiny is composed of 10 tracks Jolina personally chose. She spreads the bliss of love in When I Fall in Love and the bitter side of it in Stitches & Burns. The Fra Lippo Lippi hit will hopefully win the hearts of those with a penchant for New Wave and '80s music. Umibig Ka and Isang Taon are songs Jolina thinks she can tell the stories behind them.

Other ditties that will touch the sentimental and vulnerable in us are Pangako ng Puso, Tuwing Kasama Kita, When I Close My Eyes, Buksan Ang 'yong Puso and Will of the Wind.

"I have kept all my songs in my computer," says Jolina on how she would assess her performance as a singer. "When I have nothing to do at home, I play and listen to them. I have noticed that I have changed from the time I recorded my first song. I was like tweetums before. I felt that delivering and singing well the song was just my concern then. Now, I have to let my emotion out while singing the song. If I have to cry, then I just do it."

Is Jolina happy with the final results of Pinoy Idol?

"It was controversial because some didn't agree how the results turned out," replies the Idol judge. "I think we just did what we had to do. The public had the final say. It was frustrating but we had to follow the rules and we reminded everyone to please vote wisely.

"Let's give her (Gretchen Espina) a chance. She is willing to try her best to deserve the title. She wouldn't be able to make it if she has no talent at all.

"During the last performance night, she showed confidence and performed as if it was her last."

With her latest album and a movie, Jolina is destined to cook up good things for her fans and for the industry. So, what's the next best thing she will look forward to do and to celebrate?

"My 20th year in showbusiness," answers Jolina. "I might do a concert, movie or a weekly TV series (for that special moment in my life)
